Academic Information

Course levels

Most courses are part of Leiden University's (3 year) bachelor's and (1 or 2 year) master's programmes.

The course level is indicated by hundred-numbers: 100 to 700.
300 level courses and higher can be considered as upper level classes.
Most of these courses have specific course prerequisites (these may not be specifically given in the course description).

This means that you will need to have taken one or more classes at 100- or 200- level in the subject area that is covered by a course. This especially applies to Law or Political Science courses. A thourough background in these areas is usually required; as many are 300 and 400 level courses.

Obtaining your transcript

Non-degree students are awarded a certificate (transcript) for the courses for which they have completed the work and/or examination. This certificate is not a degree, and should be accepted by the student's home university for the credits awarded to be accepted as part of his or her degree.

Your programme coordinator at Leiden University will arrange your academic transcript at the end of your studies at Leiden.

The academic transcript contains the subjects you attended, the grades received and the credits obtained. 2 Original transcripts are sent to your home institution. Transcripts are never given to students directly.
